In a recent interview Naoki Yoshida explains the difficulties that face the Final Fantasy franchise and why he believes it is “struggling”.
Yoshida Reveals the Final Fantasy Series is “Struggling”
Final Fantasy is a long-running franchise that once upon a time was thought to be the final game of the studio, but proved otherwise. Now facing its 16th entry of the mainline series, Naoki Yoshida director of the MMORPG FFXIV explains why the long series is beginning to struggle.
Final Fantasy XVI is the next RPG in the series, set to release in 2023 for Playstation 5. Yoshida or as he is known by many as Yoshi-P was recently interviewed by Inverse, and shared his thoughts on the latest project. He boldly explains why the idea of “online gaming” will eventually disappear over time, with the idea that games will no longer be majorly defined as either “multiplayer or single-player” as games all have an online component of sorts.

F is for Fantasy
As for what exactly Final Fantasy is, he points out for him, it’s about “a deep story” containing “rich gaming design” with the inclusion of “chocobos, moogles and summons”. In a nutshell that’s what makes a Final Fantasy game, but each entry in the series follows a different story. Fans will find these familiar elements throughout the series of games, even the MMORPG FF14.
Final Fantasy and the Future
Yoshi-P has been manning the MMORPGFinal Fantasy XIVfor more than 10 years, and he hopes that the game that’s beloved by many will be here to stay. His prediction is that MMORPGs will go through some changes, especially with VR chips. This is something that he thought would happen much faster but has now been delayed due to the pandemic as well as other impacting factors.
But one thing that is worrying him is the progression of Final Fantasy as a series. He shares that in order for FF to find success, it will depend on how it adapts to the “industry trends” and believes “the series is currently struggling”. The reason behind this is that there are a number of requests in terms of the direction of the game, and it isn’t possible to satisfy them all in one game. The answer is to continue to produce “multiple games, and continue creating the best we can at any given time”.
This is very unstable as fans tend to have certain expectations when it comes to the directions of games. Whether they will sate the appetite of gamers as they see new entries of the FF series, only time will tell. FFXVI is definitely heading in a much darker direction than previous entries, which is apparent by its themes. The game will be quiteaction-orientatedbut still have a mode dedicated to the story.
Hopefully, we’ll be getting a closer look at the game soon as previously Yoshida shared thenext trailerwill release sometime this Fall and that this time is will concentrate on the story elements of the game. With Tokyo Game Show taking place in September. Square Enix will also have a booth at Gamescom which sets to include current games.
