Clair Obscur: Expedition 33feels very much like an old-school JRPG in almost every sense. It has turn-based combat with a little bit of a spin to it, a compelling narrative and charming cast of characters to keep you hooked, and an open overworld that you can explore to your heart’s content. The last part is important, because getting around on foot is a huge chore that, thankfully, the developers give you a mount fairly early on. That mount, Esquie, quickly becomes more than simply a back to ride on, as he learns to swim, dive underwater and eventually fly. In this guide, we’ll go over how and when Esquie is able to unlock flying.

Who is Esquie?
Esquie is one of the more jubilant characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, having such a lovely and playful behavior despite the world falling apart all around him. Still, he’s considered one of the most powerful beings in the world, and rightfully so.
You will meet this powerfully charming being fairly early on in the story, and with it gain access to much quicker traversal. He also joins you in camp, and at the start of Act II, he will become a key part of your camp, being able to raise your relationship with him.

The following contains end game spoilers!
Gaining Access to Flying
You may notice all throughout the land that The Fracture didn’t only segment all the areas into their own little islands, but they sent them into the sky as well. These locations are permanently stuck, floating hundreds of feet above sea level, seemingly with no way to bring them down. Fortunately, Esquie can obtain the means of getting up there so you can access them.
Unfortunately, gaining access to flying is based on how far you are into the story. As you progress, Esquie will earn little transportation quirks. He starts off by simply being able to smash through hazardous terrain in the overworld, allowing you access to new areas on the first continent. Then, when he gets his next lost rock, he is given the ability to swim, which opens up a huge array of opportunities and areas you normally wouldn’t be able to get to, some of which are dangerous and should be left until near the end.

For flying, it comes after the biggest pivotal moment in the game, you could say. This occurs afterEpilogue Aliciaand the start ofAct III: Maellewhere our young protagonist figures out a way to bring back people from the dead, essentially. She and Verso are whisked away by Esquie and Monoco and brought back to camp, and upon leaving the camp, you will now have access to flying.
This is essentially at the end of the game, so while you may go straight to the final boss, gaining access to flying opens up a significant portion of side content that you can do before finishing the story. There’s an entire continent to the east that you can fully explore, but it’s definitely less densely packed in comparison to the rest of the world.
