Sony Group CorporationandKadokawa Corporationhave announced a strategic capital and business alliance, resulting from the closer relationship between the two companies. Sony is not acquiring Kadokawa—owner of developers such asFromSoftware, Acquire, and Spike Chunsoft, as well as its significant business in various media—but is becoming its largest shareholder.
What’s Going On With Sony’s “Acquisition” of Kadokawa?
The agreement allows Sony, as of January 7, to acquire over 12 million shares of Kadokawa Corporation for approximately 307 million euros. Combined with the shares previously acquired in 2021, Sony now owns roughly 10% of Kadokawa.
In the official statement published by Sony, the company highlights that collaborations on several projects will be strengthened through this capital and business alliance, which aims to “maximize the value of both companies' intellectual properties on a global scale and facilitate broader and deeper collaboration, including potential joint investments in content creation, joint discovery of new creators, and joint promotion.”

“Moving forward, the two companies plan to discuss specific collaboration initiatives, such as adapting Kadokawa’s intellectual properties into live-action films and global series, co-producing anime works, expanding the global distribution of Kadokawa’s anime through Sony Group, further expanding Kadokawa’s game publishing efforts, and developing human resources to promote and expand virtual production.”

Takeshi Natsuno, CEO of Kadokawa Corporation, has issued a similar statement, emphasizing leveraging the strengths of both companies to expand their licenses and enhance their value worldwide.
Hiroki Totoki, President, COO, and CFO of Sony Group Corporation, confirmed that they will deepen their collaboration to achieve Kadokawa’s goal of becoming a global multimedia company and to advance Sony’s “creative entertainment vision.”
