Nioh 3can’t be called an open-world game—its creators have chosen a different approach and are now speaking openly about it.
Nioh 3 — The Saga Continues
AfterNiohandNioh 2—both playable inThe Nioh Collection—many wondered if the saga by Team Ninja had ended. But that’s not the case; there’s more to come.
This was confirmed during the recent State of Play, whereNioh 3was announced for early 2026. A demo is already available on the PS Store.

While the exact release date is still unknown, it has been confirmed for PC, Steam Deck, and PS5.
The highly anticipated sequel shifts away from the series' linear design by introducing a “field-based” map rather than full open-world gameplay.

Team Ninja emphasized the difference in a recent interview with 4Gamer, explaining why they opted for interconnected open fields rather than a seamless open world.
Design Philosophy Explained
According toFumihiko Yasuda,Nioh 3’s general producer, the goal was to create “a seamlessly connected Nioh” that gives players the freedom to explore.
However, building a full open world would go against the series’ nature. Yasuda describesNiohas a “dense experience of death and repetition.” Diluting that density to achieve open-world scale “would no longer beNioh 3.”
“If we’re makingNioh 3, thedensity and craftsmanshipof the gameplay are non-negotiable,” Yasuda added.
Thus, Team Ninja opted forinterconnected fieldsthat support exploration while preserving theintensity and tight designthat defineNioh.
Challenging Zones: The Hells
This density comes through areas called“Hells”—challenging zones corrupted by intense Yokai energy. These are purified by defeating the area boss.
Cleansing them enables progression, and Team Ninja describes them as “high-risk, high-reward” zones, with powerful enemies, tough obstacles, and exclusive loot.

Producer Kohei Shibata confirmed this gameplay loop: exploring the fields and clearing the Hells is crucial for leveling up and acquiring new gear and abilities.
Nioh 3won’t feature mounts, but it will include abilities that let players move around more quickly.
Nioh 3launches on PS5 and PC in 2026. In the meantime, its demo is available on the PS Store until June 18.
