Published in 2022, Julia May Jonas' debut novelVladimiris a provocative look at sexual politics, trauma, and the power dynamic between teacher and student at a small liberal arts college. It was almost inevitable that the book would eventually get an adaptation in some form or fashion, but it was just a matter of who would be the one to pick it up. We now have our answer, asNetflixwill be turning the acclaimed novel into a series, withRachel Weiszset to star.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has given the go-ahead for a limited seriesstarring Weisz in the titular roleas an English professor who goes unnamed in Jonas' novel. The author will also serve as a writer and executive producer on the series, with Kate Robin (Six Feet Under, The Affair) serving as showrunner. There’s no word yet on who will play the sexy young junior professor of literature who is the subject of Weisz’s obsession, but check out the full synopsis forVladimirbelow:

‘Vladimir’ Received High Praise When It Was Published

Called “delightful…cathartic, devious, and terrifically entertaining,” by the New York Times,Vladimirwas a stunning debut novel by Jonas that received a ton of praise when it was first published three years ago. Not only was it an NPR, Washington Post, Time, People, Vulture, Guardian, Vox, Kirkus Reviews, Newsweek, LitHub, and New York Public Library Best Book of the Year, it was also deemed to be one of Shondaland’s 13 Best College-Set Novels of All Time thanks to its wonderful prose and three-dimensional characters that were put through the wringer by Jonas over the course of its 256 pages.

Its timely subject matter dealing with the female experience was as captivating as it was colorful, and we can’t think of anyone better than Weisz to play the lead role, so long as Netflix manages to find the perfect Vladimir for her to play off of. She’s already proven herself to be one of Hollywood’s most versatile actresses thanks to her roles in the likes ofConstantine,The Constant Gardener(which earned her an Academy Award), andBlack Widow, in which she portrayed the role of Melina Vostokoff. It’s a part she’ll reprise once more inthe upcoming MCU flickThunderbolts, which is set to hit theaters on June 01, 2025.
