Mark Darrah, a formerBioWareemployee with over 23 years of experience at the studio, explains what the company is currently working on following the completion ofDragon Age: The Veilguard.

Mass Effect 5 Is Still In The Pre-Production Phase

Fans of BioWare are eagerly anticipating the next installment ofMass Effect, the acclaimed sci-fi action RPG series that hasn’t had a completely new title since 2017.

While many might expectMass Effect 5(announced four years ago) to now begin full-scale production, the reality is different. Mark Darrah, a seasoned veteran who served as director and executive producer on theDragon Ageseries, has clarified that things don’t quite work that way at BioWare.

Mass Effect 5 Isn’t Ready for Full Scale Production Yet

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Darrah explains that while part of the team from Dragon Age: The Veilguard is being reassigned toMass Effect 5, many others are being sent to assist with other projects at EA.

“Mass Effect isn’t ready to suddenly have a team of 250 or 300 people working on it,” Darrah pointed out. “In the past, when BioWare was focused on a single project, like Anthem or The Veilguard, that project would go full throttle to absorb all available resources.”

“That’s not exactly what’s happening withMass Effect 5.You can see this when you look at people’s profiles on social media. Some of those who worked on The Veilguard are being redirected to Mass Effect, but others are being assigned to other parts of EA becauseMass Effectsimply isn’t ready for them yet.”

“This could actually be great because it means that BioWare, for the first time, is truly able to focus on a single project, devoting all its attention to one goal: making the best Mass Effect possible.”

Thus, it appears thatMass Effect 5is still in the pre-production phase, and the studio hasn’t yet planned its full-scale development. This suggests that we’re still in for a long wait before we can once again embark on a journey through the galaxy.
