Two ofMarvel’s four Netflix shows,Marvel’s DaredevilandMarvel’s Jessica Jones, have already debuted.Marvel’s Luke Cageis slated to arrive next year, followed byMarvel’s Iron Fist, which just landed showrunnerScott Bucklast week. Luke Cage starMike Colterhas already been established in numerousMarvel’s Jessica Jonesepisodes before transitioning to his new series, which is currently in production. There are numerous connections between characters inMarvel’s DaredevilandMarvel’s Jessica Jones, but each show has a tone all its own. During an interview withCollider,Mike Colterrevealed how his show will be different from his predecessors.
“I feel like they all have their own story and their own thing that they’re doing, and they’re not going to be compared to one another, except for the fact that they are in the same genre.Jessica’s storyline is so different fromDaredevil’s storyline. Daredevil’s storyline is so different from mine. There’s a social aspect involved withLuke Cage, there is a criminal element involved, and there is a procedural element involvement. We focus on a variety of different things. I think it will be a surprise. I don’t know if we’ll be taking things to the next level because Jessica did such a great job. I don’t know what to expect, as far as the response, but I know it’s going to be different.”
Much like in theMarvel Comics, this version of Luke Cage will have super strength and unbreakable skin, after a sabotaged experiment. Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city-forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.Mike Colteralso revealed that he was worried about how the character would cross over fromMarvel’s Jessica Jonesto his own series, since they didn’t have a showrunner in place when he was filmingMarvel’s Jessica Jones, but now everything is in sync.
“It’s unique and daunting. I knew there wouldn’t be a lot of material written for me. The first show was written for her and from her point of view, so it was something that I was concerned about because, at the time, we didn’t have a showrunner for Cage and we didn’t know what his storyline was going to be. I didn’t want to have a complete reboot of the story. I didn’t want to start in one place, and then come in and be like, ‘Is this the same person?’ But then, I realized that luckily the showrunner (Cheo Hodari Coker) had seen some of the footage of Jessica during the process and he could get a feel for where Cage was and, from there, start the writing. Ultimately he wrote it in a way that felt right. It felt like it was just expanding on who he was already.”
Mike Colterleads a cast that also includesMahershala Alias Cottonmouth,Theo Rossias Shades, Simone Missick as Misty Knight,Alfre Woodardas Mariah Dillard and Frank Whaley as Detective Scarfe.Rosario Dawsonis also returning as Claire Temple, a.k.aNight Nurse, with Sonia Braga recently signing on to play Claire’s mother.
