While promoting theBlu-rayandDVDrelease ofAvengers: Age of Ultronearlier this week,Kevin Feigeheld a Q&A session, where he spoke about a number ofMarvelprojects. After the Q&A, the producer andMarvelStudios President spoke withIGN, where he was asked about the news that UFC women’s championRonda Rouseyis interested in playingCaptain Marvel. When asked what he thinks about her love for the character,Kevin Feigehad this to say.
“I love it. That happens occasionally, and I think that’s a testament more to the strength of the characters. Going back to my early days atMarvel, there were always various people campaigning to beWolverine. I guess that was pre-Twitter and pre-Internet days, but still for some reason would pop up in Wizard Magazine. Wizard Magazine would always have ‘this person wants to play this role!’ It’s a testament to how great the characters are that it appeals to such a wide range of talented, talented people.”
Captain Marvelis set for release on July 18, 2025, so we still have more than three years beforeMarvel’s first female-lead superhero movie hits theaters. While a director hasn’t come on board yet, the studio has setNicole PerlmanandMeg LeFauveto write the script. Over the past year or so, several actresses have been rumored for theCaptain Marvelrole, includingEmily Blunt,Charlize Theron,Katheryn Winnickand, most recently,Rebecca Ferguson, who is said to be the studio’s top choice. The producer confirmed that they actually haven’t started meeting actors quite yet, while discussing their casting process.
“You look at the ways we’ve cast our films in the past and it’s always about who’s the best person to inhabit the character, whether that is an actor likeChris Hemsworthwho bulks up, or a wrestler likeDave Bautistawho played Drax who ends up being an amazing performer, an amazing actor and a clever and witty and pointed comedic actor. For us, it’s sitting down with people and starting to meet people and as the script takes shape and as we start to build who the character should be and finding the right person to match it up. We haven’t necessarily started sitting down with people yet and meeting on that part.”
During a separate interview withMTV, the producer revealed that there won’t be any casting announcements forCaptain Marvelthis year, while executive producerJeremy Latchamadded that it is important the studio and the writers get the character right first, before worrying about the casting.Kevin Feigeteased that they will also use this time to figure out what otherPhase Threemovies Carol Danvers will be utilized in.Jeremy Latchamalso admitted that they do pay attention to what the fans want.
“For me, we always have a clear sense of who we want to cast and who we’re interested in. We have amazing casting directors - Sarah Finn, who’s been with us sinceIron Man- but at the same time, when a fan list comes out, we read it, we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like. Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right. It’s always fun to kinda go through it and see what people are up to.”
It isn’t known ifJeremy Latchamwas referring toCaptain Marvel, in terms of a fan-favorite who they don’t think is right. Could he be referring toEmily BluntorCharlize Theron, two actresses who have long been rumored to be a contender? We don’t know for sure, but fans can take it to heart that, if you have picks for who you want to see in certainMarvelmovies, chances areKevin FeigeandJeremy Latchamwill read them.
