Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Took Inspiration From a Meryl Streep Film

According to Greta Gerwig, her childhood memories of finding damaged toys inspired Weird Barbie. However, she clarified that Lois Lowry’s 1993 novelThe Giveralso influenced the character.

The story of the novel was set in a dystopian world, showing a community where people transfer their memories to an individual called the Receiver. Each generation has a new Receiver who is mentored by the previous one, who goes on to take the role of the Giver.
