Now exclusively on Spotify, The God of War soundtrack is available 1 week earlier than anyplace else.Bear McCrearywas approached by Santa Monica Studio to compose the music for the new reboot of God of War. Bear being a long fan of the franchise was happy to be asked. The more Bear work and collaborated with Cory Barlog,God of Wargame director, it dawned on him that he would need new music to properly tell this new installment’s story.
I took my memories of that classic God of War soundtrack – the deep choirs, pounding drums, and shrieking brass – and reinvented them for a Norse age. I wrote new themes, and introduced to the music exotic instrumentation and languages from various Northern European folk traditions.
Of all the new pieces that I wrote for God of War, the song that means the most to me personally is probably “Memories of Mother.” This was the first theme I wrote for God of War, and it was not for the Mother — it was for Kratos himself! - Bear McCreary
Bear and the Sony creative team felt that the song didn’t quite capture the essence that is Kratos and the song was not used until later in the game’s development to represent Atreus' mother. The Mother Theme became interwoven into multitude of scenes.
“Memories of Mother” was the melody I first imagined years ago, when I was tasked with finding a new sound for the franchise. I hope that fans will be deeply moved by it as they play through this epic adventure on April 20. - Bear McCreary
