If you were looking forward to seeing Baldur’s Gate 3 be released on the current console generation, Xbox One and PS4, well it looks like it won’t happen according to the developer.
Current Consoles Cannot Handle Baldur’s Gate III According to Developer
In a recent article by Eurogamer, executive producer David Walgrave explained that they didn’t think “that current-gen consoles would be able to run it” and this is mainly due to there being a whole bunch of “technical upgrades” made to the engine used forBaldur’s Gate 3.
While not all hopes are dashed, Walgrave shared that if they were to make it work on current consoles, they would need to “tone down the textures and this and that and it wouldn’t look as cool anymore”.

At PAX East 2020, we got to have a look at a 3 hour presentation, showing some of the upcominggameplay, mechanics, and more for Baldur’s Gate 3. Our initial impressions are that it looks a lot likeDivinity Original Sin 2, but of course with an upgraded engine with some very nice graphics. But there is a lot more to it, so if you want to know more, we have a wholeimpressions video.
But this isn’t the final look for BG3, according to Larian there is still a lot of polish that is needed for the game. There is definitely a lot of experience on board for development, with Walgrave sharing that the cinematic producer and director are from Telltale.

So, if you see that – and if you see all the technical stuff that has gone into our engine – I would call it a triple-A game. It has a triple-A budget, has a triple-A team by now, and I think that is our aspiration.
As for whether it will come to a handheld device such as the Switch, that is also not currently part of the plan. In an article by Polygon, Walgrave expressed that the main focus is for PC:
We’re currently focusing on PC. We’ll start thinking about other platforms as soon as this one is done.
So while this doesn’t completely rule out PS4, Xbox One or even Switch, it sounds like there would be a lot of compromise when it comes to graphics, downgrading to run on consoles.
