The anime coming so late into the season and at such a late timeslot is one thing, although both were likely out of Crunchyroll’s control, but beyond that,the way Crunchyroll is presentingDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionmakes for a poor viewing experiencethat makes it unnecessarily hard to watch. It’s unknown why Crunchyroll is presenting the show in such a way, but considering how they usually handle anime, it’s hard to justify their decision.
Crunchyroll’s bizarre handling of subtitles, explained
The biggest problem with Crunchyroll’s handling of theDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionanimeis the horrible way the subtitles are being used. For starters,Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction’s subtitles are blatantly for the English dub script, which leads to a lot of instances of characters saying things that even someone who doesn’t speak Japanese should be able to tell is incorrect. While it’s understandable for a localization to take some liberties with the original text, it’s odd that the anime would take so many and even odder that Crunchyroll wouldn’t keep it separate from the Japanese dub.
Notable examples of changed dialogue include Kadode randomly saying “Girl power!” in episode #1, Rin not saying that she loves boy’s love in episode #2, and Watarase referring to students by first name, even though a teacher in Japan wouldn’t do that.
Making things even worse is the lack of care in the implementation of the subtitles. Not only is the on-screen text and background dialogue never translated for some reason, but because the subtitles are for the English dub and its specific timing,there are many scenes inDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionwith either no subtitles for dialogue or subtitles for dialogue not being said. All of it comes together for a confusing and frustrating experience far below Crunchyroll’s usual standards, and it makes it unnecessarily hard to watch what’s easily one of the best new anime of the season.
Being one of the most highly anticipated adaptations of the season; it’s surprising to see how its been treated
Crunchyroll is doing a terrible job withDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, and it’s hard to understand why. With how suddenly the show was announced, it might be thatCrunchyroll might not have had time to get a proper team to handleDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction’s subtitles, so they left everything to Ocean Productions, the studio behind the English dub, even though they weren’t equipped to do as good a job as Crunchyroll. Regardless, it still makesDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionhard to watch in its original language, so hopefully,Crunchyrollwill try and fix things before the series finishes.
