Sure, laughter is the best medicine, but who knew it could also lead to mass evacuations? We’ve all had our moments, but not many can claim to have ignited a three-hour-long exodus with a single fart.

Will Smith’s fart during the filming of MIB 3 caused a hilarious three-hour evacuation on set.

In a recent episode ofLet’s Talk Off Camerawith Kelly Ripa,Men in Blackdirector Barry Sonnenfeld, 71, spilled the beans on an uproarious incident that might just take the cake for the most memorable moment on set. And just when you thought his most talked-about moment was ‘the slap’ heard around the world at the 2022 Oscars, Sonnenfeld blew the lid off another indelible Smith moment.

Apparently, Smith’s fart had the power to clear a room faster than a fire alarm! Yes, you heard that right—a single toot caused a three-hour-long evacuation during the filming of the 1997 classic.

Men in Black: Will Smith’s Legendary Fart

The last time we sawWill Smith, 56, in theMen in Blackfranchise was in 2012 forMIB 3, where he and Tommy Lee Jones took us on yet another wild intergalactic ride. But whispers from behind the scenes suggest that filming wasn’t just alive with star power; it was also, quite literally, filled with hot air.

While you might assume those tears on set were touching moments, director Barry Sonnenfeld revealed they were actually ignited by something far more… fragrant!

The usually composed Tommy Lee Jones had a comical reaction, scrambling to escape the situation when he realized what was happening.

In a recent episode of Kelly Ripa’sLet’s Talk Off Camera, Sonnenfeld shared some side-splitting stories while promoting his new book,Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time. The chat quickly veered into a famous moment fromMIB. The director recounted:

We were getting ready to shoot Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, and Tommy does not suffer fools, I’ll tell you that.

Director Barry Sonnenfeld described Will Smith as a “farter”.

With a crew bustling around and a complicated scene about to unfold, it was all hands on deck. They had this fancy, “hermetically sealed”vehicle that was supposed to keep everyone safe, but it seems it did a great job of sealing in something else entirely!

Just as they were set to roll, disaster struck—or perhaps we should say, disaster wafted in. According to Sonnenfeld, the vehicle was supposed to be locked tight to prevent it from opening and sending anyone tumbling out. But it turns out that something else was about to escape. He added:

I hear Will Smith go, ‘Oh, Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder.’

The calm and collected Lee Jones, known for his no-nonsense attitude, suddenly found himself scrambling down the stairs.

Barry Sonnenfeld Further Evacuated the Scene

Barry Sonnenfeld elaborated,“What happened was, Will Smith is a farter. It’s just some people are, and you really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart.” The director added:

You don’t even want to be sitting next to him at the Disney ranch.

Can you imagine? The poor crew must have felt like they were living in a scene from a horror movie, minus the aliens! Sonnenfeld’s recollection only gets more amusing from there:

SWe evacuated the stage for about three hours, and that’s incredible. He’s a lovely guy, just he farts. Some do, some don’t.

Seriously… well, it seems a healthy diet seems to be a recipe for disaster in this case!

Now, let’s pivot to another infamous incident that had everyone talking: the2022 Oscar slap.Chris Rock, known for his sharp wit and fearless humor, certainly had his fair share of run-ins with Hollywood’s elite. But in this case, he was fortunate he didn’t face Smith’s worst ‘attack’—the one revealed byMen in Blackdirector.

Rock’s joke at the 2022 Oscars about Jada Pinkett Smith landed with a bang, but one can only imagine how much more explosive it could have been if The Fresh Prince had opted to unleash his comedic relief differently!
