Apple’s annual developer conference takes place in early June and offers a rundown of the new features that will come to theiPhone, iPad, Mac,Apple Watch, Apple TV, and all the company’s other known platforms and initiatives later in the year.
For 2023, the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is in its 34th year and Apple has said it is its “biggest and most exciting yet”, with developers, students and some members of the press able to experience the in-person event at Apple Park, while others will be able to follow along online.

What happened at WWDC 2023?
Tim Cook opened WWDC 2023 saying that the Apple Store is 15 years old - and talked about how Apple changed everything with the iPhone and the App Store, a precursor to the keynote’s biggest announcement, Apple Vision Pro.
Apple Vision Pro
Rumoured to be called Apple Reality Pro, the new headset is actually calledApple Vision Proand one thing about the rumours was true - there’s a huge $3499 price tag on it when it launches in 2024. The headset is designed for mixed reality, designed to blend the virtual and real worlds, with high quality displays and loads of sensors to enable 3D capture, eye tracking and hand gestures. you’re able to control it with movement or via Siri, and it’s designed as much for work as it is for play. It’s powered by an Apple M2 chip - hence the price - with a new R1 chip alongside to handle the massive amounts of data it will need to offer a range of novel experiences. Everything your iPhone, iPad or Mac can do will be integrated or virtualised into Vision Pro.
Apple MacBook Air 15
Apple has announced a15-inch version of the MacBook Air, meaning there’s a way to get a bigger MacBook Air experience. There’s a 15.3-inch Retina display with 5mm bezels, and it’s powered by the Apple M2 processor. There are four colour options, MagSafe charging (with colour-matched cables) and 2x Thunderbolt ports and a 3.5mm headphone socket. It’s available to purchase right away,with a price of $1299or £1399 in the UK.
Apple Studio Mac with M2 Ultra and M2 Pro chips - and a new Mac Pro
Apple has completed the transition to Apple Silicon across the Mac family, announcing that the Mac Pro will run on the M2 Ultra. The Mac Pro also supports PCIe expansion on Apple Silicon. TheMac Studioretains the same design as the M1 version, but now will be offered in M2 Ultra and M2 Pro, so there’s a choice for your compact desktop power.
When the next iPhone launches it will be runningiOS 17and WWDC gave us a look at a full range of features that will be coming to iPhone. That includes some really interesting stuff, like Live Voicemail, NameDrop for contact sharing, enhanced autocorrection features, a new Journal app, and a cute Standby mode for the screen at night.
For youriPadthere’s also going to be a range of new experiences throughiPadOS 17. That’s going to give you a load of widgets, lock screen personalisations, live activities you can track on the display, the Health app will be coming to iPad and you’ll be able to edit PDFs in Notes.
watchOS 10
The next major software build coming to Apple Watch is going to be watchOS 10 which you canread all about in our watchOS 10 feature. There are some new options for customisation, a Snoopy watch face, better support for sports like cycling, widgets and a whole lot more, like Smart Stack, support for that NameDrop feature, and topographical maps on Watch Ultra.
macOS 14 Sonoma
The upcoming software update forMacsis called macOS 14 Sonoma. It introduces a range of new features that we explore inour macOS 14 rumour round up feature. Those include more dynamic widgets that you can drop on your desktop, as well as accessing iPhone widgets via Continuity. There’s going to be new video effects that you can use in third-party apps like Zoom, a game mode - with Directors Cut of Death Stranding promised - while you won’t have to say “hey” every time you want Siri’s attention.
Audio and TV updates
The AirPods Pro are getting an update for adaptive audio that will allow you to blend transparency mode and noise cancelling, designed to help you get a perfect blend of audio and wider environmental awareness. Better noise cancelling in calls is promised, as well as muting when you start talking. Over on the TV side, you’ll be able to use AirPlay in supporting hotels, so you can watch content on the TV in your room rather than just on your phone. There’s also going to be support for FaceTime in Apple TV, using your iPhone as the camera.
What is WWDC?
Every year, usually in the late spring, Apple holds a developer conference to announce upcoming major software updates to all its platforms. Sometimes it also previews new hardware. All the consumer-facing announcements are made during a Day One keynote that is live-streamed online, although Apple tends to hold other presentations for developers and students to watch. The idea behind the entire conference is to get developers up to speed on Apple’s latest developments so that they can adequately prepare and update their apps. WWDC also signals to partners what Apple has coming down the pike.
